Diane’s Memoir

Under the Radar: When Truth Hides in Plain Sight
Growing up on the family tree of an American dynasty did not protect Diane Tate from the darker legacies of sexual abuse, addiction, and domestic violence. This story is one of survival in the face of peril, redemption despite self-hatred, and the impact that abusive legacy has on establishing the trajectory of a child's life.

Whether she was walking the streets of her small hometown in North Carolina or being presented to American and international society in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel in New York City, her truth was hiding from everyone, including herself. Not only does she trudge through the darkness of alcoholism and an abusive marriage; she takes the reader on a journey of healing, making the choice to stand up for herself when it mattered the most.

Within these pages you will find inspiration in the poetry of Diane's life. You will wince and cheer, laugh and cry, and walk away with the hope that even a life lived in the shadows of your own mind can be brought into the light.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A compelling story, beautifully told.

Under the Radar is a compelling story, beautifully written. Although the details of her story are specific to her life, it is also, sadly, all too universal. I love the combination of poetry and prose. Each chapter’s poem serves as a reflection on how she holds, in the present, what she is recounting of her past.

I am thankful that Diane shared her story. I know that everyone will find something they can recognize, and be lifted and inspired by.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Poignant Story of Healing and Becoming Whole

Beautifully written story of a journey through life while battling abuse, alcoholism and codependency to come out on the other side with a better understanding of her identity and self worth.
Under the Radar will make you smile, cry and cheer as the well written story unfolds.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A story of survival

Under The Radar is a deep and meaningful account of one woman’s powerful journey through difficult and tragic hurdles. The self awareness and vision Diane develops as she walks this path is shared with the reader in beautifully written detail. I found myself identifying with some of her struggles, and benefiting from her explanation of how she grew emotionally
    during these growth periods.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Such a good book!

My friend gave me this book and I'm so glad she did! I'm a recovering alcoholic who also survived childhood abuse and trauma and this book has helped me so much! I could relate to most of Diane's story and was given some wisdom on how to handle feelings I've had due to the trauma. I highly recommend this book! It is very well written (I couldn't put it down!) and gives you a glimpse of what it's like to live with abuse and trauma. Diane is a great story teller, I felt like I was there with her throughout the book. Definitely a must read!

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Working hard to create a "new version" of life

I found the poetry that Diane wrote for each chapter of her past was so meaningful and poignant. These poems often helped her to fulfill a need to look toward a brighter future, develop self worth, and express her valuable place in the lives of others. This is well written and shows how sexual abuse needs to be addressed head on by the victim no matter what others may feel.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Inspirational and brave

This book is such an inspiration for others to not hide away and drown in the secrets of what’s been done to you. Rather face and expose those secrets. The less these actions are kept in the shadows, the less they hopefully will be able to happen. Thank you, Diane, for coming forward.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Brave & Honest

I was reading several books when I started this one. I stayed up until 3 AM one night to finish it. Her journey of healing was very inspiring. She describes how abuse affected each member of her family. If you want to understand one person's journey to heal trauma, this book is an excellent choice. I hope to hear more from this author.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Finding Your Voice

A lot in this book resonated with me, interacting with family, standing up for oneself, owning one's truth, finding one's voice and moving forward despite life’s challenges.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you for sharing your story, your strength and your heartache. It will stay with me.

Beautiful and honest account of the author's journey to an understanding of herself and the obstacles of life, and how this understanding leads to change and transformation. Love her ability at self-reflection and growth. A candid account of the human condition that we can all relate to. The chapters are interspersed with beautifully written and soulful poetry that expresses her understanding of her own feelings and experiences.
